Vauxhall Car Sales in Europe

Vauxhall Motors is one of the oldest automakers in the UK. Founded in Vauxhall, London in 1857, it was originally an iron foundry. Later, the company produced marine engines and pumps. Then in 1903, Vauxhall produced its first working automobile. A few years later, they offer them to the public.

As a small company, Vauxhall was forced to make its name and reputation through competition. Most of the early models were entered in races where they performed quite well. With an average speed of 46 miles per hour, they were years ahead of the competition. The free advertising that the company received from these victories increased sales in short order.

By the end of the First World War, almost all of the cars that Vauxhall made were sports cars. But all that changed when General Motors (GM) bought the company for 1.8 million pounds in 1925. You see, GM did not want vauxhall car sales to be based on luxury or speed. Rather, they wanted passenger cars that would appeal to the average European.

By the end of the twenties, the company was selling American designed cars to Europeans. Just like Ford, Vauxhall had varying degrees of success in Europe. For instance, their smaller, more economical cars were generally quite successful, while their larger, more stylish cars often flopped.

But this was not always the case. The famous Cavalier was the most obvious exception to the rule. The large family car was a huge hit in the UK and it even became one of Britain's most popular cars in the early 1990's.
